As we prepare to wrap up 2024 and greet the arrival of 2025, it’s worth keeping in mind what will be open and closed, both on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Here’s our quick guide.

Is the stock market open?

The two major U.S. stock markets — the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq — will be closed on Jan. 1 but will be open on Dec. 31.

Bond markets will close at 2 p.m. on Dec. 31 and will remain closed on Jan. 1. Stock trading is operative during standard hours on New Year’s Eve.

Is mail delivered? Are FedEx and UPS open?

The U.S. Postal Service will deliver mail on Dec. 31 and post-office locations will be open (but customers are advised to check with their local office for specific hours). There will be no regular mail delivery on Jan. 1, but Priority Mail Express shipments will be delivered; post-office locations will be closed that day.

UPS UPS will have limited delivery and pickup service on Dec. 31 and no delivery or pickup service on Jan. 1, except for UPS Express Critical service.

FedEx FDX will also have modified service on Dec. 31 . Service will be curtailed on Jan. 1, except for FedEx Custom Critical.

Are banks closed?

Banks are generally closed on Jan. 1. But you can always make transactions through an ATM or your bank’s app or website. Banks should be open on Dec. 31, though it’s worth checking with your local branch to see if it has shortened hours that day.

Will government offices be closed?

Since Jan. 1 is a federal holiday, all nonessential federal government offices are closed . It is also typically recognized as a state holiday, so expect state offices to be closed as well.

But what about Dec. 31? States make their own individual decisions, with a few, such as Louisiana and Wisconsin , opting to make it a state holiday.

No economic data are scheduled for release on New Year’s Day, while New Year’s Eve, at 9 a.m. Eastern time, brings the S&P Case-Shiller index of home prices in the top 20 U.S. metropolitan areas.

Are stores open?

If you’re looking for any New Year’s Eve essentials, you can rest assured that stores and supermarkets are generally open on Dec. 31, but some will close early.

Most major retailers are also open on Jan. 1. One notable exception is Costco COST, which gives its employees the day off.
