Surprising bill would let New Yorkers pay taxes in crypto

New York may soon allow residents to pay government bills — such as taxes and fines — in cryptocurrency.

On April 10, Assemblyman Clyde Vanel introduced Assembly Bill A7788 . If enacted, the bill would permit state agencies to receive popular cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin , Ethereum, Litecoin, and Bitcoin Cash for various fees and charges. These include everything from rent and fees to penalties and even taxes.

The proposal represents a turnaround in the state's approach to the digital asset space and offers a glimpse into how crypto may soon become mainstream in government infrastructure.

The measure permits the state to impose a service fee to offset any additional expenses incurred from processing crypto payments, such as transaction fees from the respective network or the cost of managing payments.

This is the second bill New York lawmakers have introduced highlighting crypto recently. Another bill–Bill A06515– aimed at combating cryptocurrency scams and protecting investors received headlines as recently as last month.

The drive comes in the context of a national trend. Since President Donald Trump took office in January, the new administration has taken a more crypto-friendly stance, planning for the U.S. to become a leader in blockchain innovation.

Assembly Bill A7788 is pending before the Committee on Governmental Operations. If it passes that stage, it will advance to debate and a vote by the state Senate .
