WalletConnect founder says crypto will be in every company one day

Pedro Gomes, founder of WalletConnect , believes the future of crypto is universal. In a conversation with TheStreet Roundtable , he compared WalletConnect’s role in crypto to Visa’s role in traditional payments.

“Visa isn’t a bank or even banking infrastructure—it’s rails for banks to connect to merchants,” Gomes said. “Similarly, the WalletConnect network provides rails for wallets to connect to applications.”

WalletConnect doesn’t function as a wallet itself. Instead, it’s what Gomes calls “infrastructure for wallet connectivity,” designed to streamline how users interact with various crypto apps across different chains.

Crypto is the new internet

Gomes believes that eventually, every business will be forced to use crypto and blockchain at least in some parts of their operations.

“We realized every company is an internet company; some are just early adopters. Crypto’s no different. Eventually, every company will have a crypto department or team supporting wallet ownership—it’s just not mature yet,” he explained.

With every company building their own wallets and wallet services, the risk of the space becoming even more fractured than it already is is high. Through WalletConnect, users can keep their different wallets organized and view them all without looking at 5 different spots.

Mobile leads the way

WalletConnect is focused on building mobile wallet solutions. “When we built WalletConnect, we optimized for mobile wallets, and our demographics reflect that with a strong dominance in (mobile-dominated) markets,” he explained.

Desktop devices are not usually someone’s primary portal to the internet outside of the U.S. and Europe. “In Southeast Asia, for example, not having a desktop is common, and their primary device is mobile,” noted Gomes.

As phones have become more powerful, even people with desktops now prefer to use their phone for searching the internet, sending messages, taking meetings, and much more. If crypto is going to catapult itself into the mainstream, it is important to consider mobile users and their experience.
